hi all,

new here and have a question about a small task i'm trying to figure out.

i have 2 studio monitors connected to an audio interface which is then connected to my PC.

i want the 2 speakers and the audio interface to automatically turn off when there is no music playing from the PC.

the closest thing i've found but am not sure if it will work is the smart strip 10.

basically can it detect that the speakers and audio interface are being used when sound is coming through?

thanks!

Hello!

The Smart Strip ($27) will switch the power to your audio interface (and anything else) when another device plugged into the "control outlet" is switched. So if you normally switch your PC, a monitor, a desktop lamp, or something else, the Smart Strip would work fine for this application.

I have not tested it, but you may be able to get the Smart Strip to switch once your monitor hits the blank screen "power-saving mode". If this is something your interested in, let me know and I will test the concept for you before you purchase.

If none of the above, you will have to look into creating an audio-sensing circuit that toggles a 120V relay. If you go this route, be sure to incorporate a delay to prevent unnecessary stress on the audio interface due to constant on and off power cycling.

One other thing to check; does your audio interface lose settings when you unplug it? Example: Turn it on and play a song. Now unplug it and plug it back in. Do you need to switch it back on manually? If so, you'll need to go a custom route in order to apply the relay to the power switch inside the device, instead of the actual power coming into it. Unfortunately most custom solutions usually spell out to lots of work for a tiny bit of convenience.

Let us know what you end up doing!

hmm, darn...

yeah it has to be an audio sensing circuit then because i leave my PC on all the time, and want the speakers to turn on automatically when i play something on the pc.

Sounds like a new z-wave device with a time delay off switch where you could use audio to trigger the off delay...
