i am going to use the ir543 as the controller used with my harmony 880, what wall dimmer and non-dimmer switches are compatible? Do I have to use x10, i have heard many negative things about x10.

The IR543 is only compatible with X10.

The limitations with X10 are noise and phase issues.

Noise issues can be resolved by using filters to block unwanted noise on the power lines which interfere with X10 communications.

Phase issues are resolved with a coupler or coupler repeater. These devices connect the two phases of electric in your home to allow communications to pass between both phases. If the home is larger (7500sq ft) then we recommend a coupler repeater which re-transmits the signal to the second phase so it will travel further without signal loss.
