|
|
| Any Motorola Homesight users out there? I'm having issues with the email notification setup and there seems to be a serious lack of information regarding this product and it's support out there. I've configured the SMTP and email profiles correctly as far as I can tell, yet whenever a scheduled event occurs I always get "Failed to send notification to..." in the event log. There don't appear to be any error logs and there's basically nothing in the way of support for this product since it was discontinued. The machine is running XP SP2 with a Linksys router, although I don't know why it would cause any outgoing SMTP issues. Anyone have any ideas? I've tried 2 different SMTP servers and still haven't received a single notification after 100+ tests... |

Hey!
Although I'm an employee for smarthomeusa, I'm also an active Homesight user. Maybe I can help you out with this.
If the software said "failed to send notification", the issue is indeed your smtp server, or even your internet connection.
You said you tried two different smtp servers. Which two? Do you send email from your computer using outlook, or another email client? If so, use the SAME smtp server taht you are using there. If you are not using ANY smtp server on your machine (and are instead using google mail or yahoo mail, for example), you should call your ISP and ask them for a valid SMTP server that you can send outgoing mail frmo. Also ask the login details.
Two common mistakes are 1) Your ISP selectively blocks certain smtp servers. They may require you to use theirs! (For us, we use optimum online, and must user their smtp server even though we dont receive mail through them). You can hit the "Test" button to test the communication instead of waiting for the software to send an actual event to you.
Other common mistake 2) is the USERNAME. On my server I was required to type the email address that I RECEIVE email through , which for me, was completely different that my ISP's email address.
If neither of these fixes work, you can give our tech support a call. The call is free and our live support is almost always available! |

Ryan,
Thanks for the quick response. I was initially trying to use the gmail SMTP servers, but I also tried the Comcast server as well which is my ISP. There have been a few instances where I didn't get a "Failed to send" message, but I still didn't receive any notifications. I didn't notice a "TEST" button within the homesight software, I'll give your suggestions a try this evening and update on my results.
Thanks again! |

Got it working! I guess I did need to use my ISP's SMTP server (Comcast in my case), and the username provided does need to be the full email address you have with them (you@yourisp.com).
Thanks for the help, greatly appreciated. |

|
|
I am having problems with getting the email notification work with my
HMEZ1000 unit.
I have tried getting it to work with Versions 1.1(original CD) and 2.01 (Downloaded from Motorola site).
I get the "failed to send notification" whenever I manually trigger an event, or when the system is armed and the event is triggered via motion.
I have successfully setup outlook express to work with two different email providers (AOL and Verizon). Using the same credentials and config doesn't seem to work with the homesight unit.
This is a Windows XP SP2 machine. I've also tried turning off the firewall to make sure that it wasn't interfereing with outgoing traffic from MHM.exe.
I have also used TCPVIEW to watch the outgoing traffic from my machine, but there is never any traffic coming from mhm.exe. When I use outlook express, you can see the port build-up and tear down during the "send/recv" operation.
Any suggestions? All other features of the HMEZ1000 are working great.

Hi Brent,
To me it sounds like your email service is not setup correctly. The "Failed to send notification" error happens for me if I deliberately make a mistake.
But it looks as though you are positive the credentials are the same as those used in outlook.
1) Just make sure that you are using the SMTP server settings, not the POP3 or IMAP, as the latter two are incoming only, and homesight doesnt use those.
2) What ISP do you have?
3) in the homesight program, click Help, and then "about homesight" What version and release does it say?
4) Another hting to check: Updates. Look in your start menu, in the motorola homesight group you should see " Motorola Homesight Software Updates". Run that application and if it updated, try the "test smtp settings" button again.
When you hit the send/recv button, outlook usually only connects to incoming servers and checks for messages- unless you have an email waiting in the "out box" to go out, or a server requires smtp authentication. So from that perspective, TCPView will show differences between the two. I will try TCPView on my known working installation of homesight and get back to you with results so you can compare. |

|
|
Hi Ryan,
From the same machine, I can successfully use outlook express to access my various email providers.
for example:
outlook express settings for my Verizon/Yahoo email account:
incoming server: incoming.yahoo.verizon.net
outgoing server: outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net
email address: myaccount@verizon.net
requires authentication "yes"
account name: myaccount
acount password: *********
Another thought would be if my symantec anti-virus is blocking... Can't check that until this evening
Thanks for the quick reply

Yes, it wouldn't hurt to shut-down antivirus to run a test. Just make sure to turn it back on!
I used sysinternals TCPView. Started it up, and once the Homesight software started, it listed that mhm.exe was listening on remote port 0. (not sure why?), but thats ok.
I created an event that only emailed me.. and then saved it, highlighted it, and hit the "execute" button. I quickly saw one new line for mhm.exe, local port 3195 and remote address of my email server, port smtp. I received the email.
So, You should definitely see a port open and close (although its VERY quick) in TCPView. Check on the points i listed, and your antivirus software, and get back to us when you can. We'll get this working! |

Ryan,
I tried a different laptop and the email notification worked fine.
Not sure why the other laptop is not working, but I won't be using it
anyway for the host.
Thanks for you help,

Chris; first try sending a normal email event to a known working email address. That will make sure your smtp server information is working correctly.
Once you get the normal email event to work fine, Try using Cingular instead of AT&T, just incase. Be sure to enter only your area code and phone number with no spaces, i.e. 2125551212 |
