The simple thing to do is use a Smart Strip with your computer and entertainment system. What this will do is when you shut off your computer or TV all other devices plugged into the Smart Strip will power down stopping voltage leakage.

Another thing you can do is replace some wall switches with occupancy sensors and have lights turn on and off automatically according to motion.

A 7-Day programmable thermostat that will allow you to lower the temperature while you are not home and at night.

It also helps to know how much energy you are using at any time and what the problem device is. With the Power Cost Monitor you can see in real time the power usage of your entire home and with the Kill-A-Watt you can isolate a problem device. Now you will know if your old microwave is costing you more then its worth.

You can save a lot of electric by changing your incandescent bulbs compact fluorescent and LED light bulbs. Also check with your utility company as they some suggestions like seal door / window drafts and use double pane windows.
