I would like to set up a security system for our lakehouse. We want to self monitor the system so we need it to call us if the alarm is activated. We would also like to be able to reset or activate the alarm by phone as this house is 200 miles away. What system would be your recommendation.

Also 1) would any system of this sort work if connected to a cellphone vs. a landline? 2) Would any system alert you if the phone line were cut?

P.S. We have a wired system from ADT in place. It is currently not activated.

All of our DIY security systems are land line voice dialers only. A great system is the Skylink SC-1000:

This system will call up to 9 numbers when the alarm is activated and play a prerecorded message, however, if the phone line was cut it would not alert you.

Since you already have a wired system you could just replace the main board and keypads with a unlocked system and program yourself. Most wired systems have cell modules that can be added for call backup. Any cell module will require a monitoring service to alert for alarm.

Thank you for your reply. Do you know where we would get a unlocked replacement main board and keypads?

Most likely you will need a panel like the Gemini P-3200. Please keep in mind that they are designed for professional installers to program and are not that easy for someone who has never done it before.
