Its been about a week since spam protection measures have been installed on the SmartHomeUSA.com discussion board. It really looks like its working, not a spam post yet!

Want to know how to make your own phpBB2 discussion board spam free? Reply here and I'd be happy to explain it.

Hi,

Have your anti-spam attempts still been working well?

I run a forum for poker players (phpBB2) and have been getting absolutely slammed with spam lately (approx. 30 posts/day). It's getting ridiculous. I'd love if you could offer any advice on how to curtail it.

Thanks,

Kris

Hey Kris,

Yes, I've installed many spam repelling mods that have made a huge dent in the amount of spam we receive. No matter what, SOME will be always be able to get through. So...

1) either hire someone or deem a forum member the "spam cop". Make a hidden sub category called "spam storage". Move all spam to that category as soon as it is discovered. Here, no one will see the posts, and more importantly, no search engines will get to it. Once you start seeing patterns in the spam stored there .......
2) get and install the SPAM WORDS mod . This mod will not allow posts with certain keywords in the subject or the body. Keep adding to this keywords list based on paterns you see in the hidden "spam storage" category. Before you know it, all the usual spam won't even be a problem anymore.
3) If you haven't already, try changing the URL of the forums! If the URL contains phpBB2 , I found I received a lot more spam bot attempts.

others advice) search the phpBB2 mod. website for the word "spam", and install whichever mods you think may help you. Here is another phpbb mod (hacks) website. Add up a few of the spam mods to your phpbb2 installation, and they WILL make a difference.

I hope this helps!
Feel free to post back if you have any more questions, and Happy Holidays!
