I've just installed some XPFM (non-dimmable flurorescent-capable inline switch modules) into standard remodel-boxes in drywall about 8 inches off the floor of my family room. They work great. But the "click" when the relay switches is mighty loud. I picked these units so that i could use CFL bulbs, but i'm seriously considering using incandescent bulbs and swapping them out for the XPDF inline switches if those are quieter (silent would be ideal).

Are the XPDF units quieter when switching than the XPFM modules?

Yes, the dimming version does not have a physical relay inside of it, so it will not click at all, it will be silent. But , as you mentioned, they should not be used with CFL's unless:

1) the CFL's are specifically "dimmable"
2) the total load of your CFL's are ABOVE 40watts of actual usage, but below the maximum of the module your using, in the case of XPDF would be 500watts.

If your CFL application for that module does not meet both 1 and 2, you cannot use a dimming module to control them. You must use a relay switch, of which all will click to some degree (although some will be louder then others).

Since relay switches do not generate much heat at all, you can safely sound insulate them with whatever flame resistant insulation you choose. That will help dampen the click sound.
